Alan B. Coon, MD, PhD
Radiation Oncologist
Dr. Alan B. Coon is a radiation oncologist who offers the latest and most refined types of radiation therapy available. He has experience with many advanced radiation techniques including TomoTherapy® — an advanced form of intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT)— and brachytherapy— a type of internal radiation which delivers treatment directly to the tumor, while sparing nearby healthy tissues and organs. At Cancer Care Partners, he works with a team of experts to heal the whole person, not just the cancer. Prior to practicing medicine, Dr. Coon worked as an engineer with several companies throughout the United States.
Dr. Coon completed his Bachelor of Science in chemical engineering from The University of Texas at Austin, and received his Master of Science and PhD from the department of chemical and biomolecular engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He continued on to receive his Doctor of Medicine from Saint Louis University School of Medicine in St. Louis, graduating magna cum laude with distinction in research. After finishing his internship at MacNeal Hospital in Berwyn, Ill., Dr. Coon completed his residency in radiation oncology at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, where he served as chief resident.
Deeply dedicated to his field, Dr. Coon has published several abstracts and papers, and given presentations, on several radiation therapy topics, including the use of TomoTherapy to treat breast cancer in those with unfavorable cardiac anatomy, the use of TomoTherapy and IMRT for advanced simultaneous boost treatments, and the use of brachytherapy, including MammoSite,® for breast, prostate and cervical cancer.
